Shalini’s Meal Program and Somosomo

Hey guys! Willow and Anna here (saved the best for last:)) We have had quite the adventures lately and we can’t wait to tell you about them!!

On the 16th we all geared up and went zip lining!!! We had a lot of fun and there were such beautiful views! While we were zip lining, we had the amazing opportunity to go into a big cave off the zip lining course. The cave was huge and super dark with a rich history. Our guides told us about the ancestors of people in the nearby village, and how they used to all live in the cave – there’s even a cannibalistic history of the cave!

The next day, we went to the house of a woman named Shalini, who lives right next to the Momi base house, to talk and learn from her and cook ourselves a delicious lunch. We then had the rest of the afternoon to relax and rest at the base house for our big day tomorrow!

We woke up, ate breakfast, and went back to Shalini’s house. On this day we helped prepare food for her to cook and take to the women’s shelter in Nadi. We cut pumpkins, made roti, cut up sausages, and seasoned chicken. We had a lot of fun talking and cooking with each other. After we had lunch and took a rest for a bit, we headed to the women’s shelter. We set up all the food and served. We really enjoyed being able to help out.

We woke up bright and early the next day, said bye to all our friends at Momi hopped on the four hour ferry to Somosomo! We all went out onto the deck and it started raining pretty hard but we thought it was really fun. We arrived at Somosomo in time for lunch, some snorkeling, and visiting the village.

On our last day of leadership, we went back to the village to make hats out of palm leaves. Unfortunately, our hats were less than impressive so don’t expect any stellar top hats coming home. After our upsetting attempt at weaving, we went back out for some snorkeling and did a fish and coral ID.

Thank you all for reading our last blog. We already miss writing them for all of you lovely people. We are having the best last few days and can’t wait to tell you about it when we get home.

Much love,

Anna and Willow<3
