Beqa Island

Hey fam, it’s John and Garrett,

The group spent three nights at a paradise beach house called Lawaki on Beqa Island. We learned about marine reef life from a Marine Biologist named Helen, she also led us on an expedition to gather data on the reef life and coral.

For our final day at Lawaki, we relaxed and played lots of games like volleyball, football, and badminton. Leaving early in the morning, we traveled by boat to a nearby village where the community members greeted us with a traditional welcoming song. The group was split into different homestays and the mothers would cook us delicious meals everyday. We had a Kava welcoming ceremony on our first night and played games with the kids. Some of us the next day were taken by the homestay fathers to their plantations where they showed us how to harvest their crop like Cassava. In the afternoons we would play lots of games with the children of the village, such as volleyball, soccer, rugby, and toss the football. We played these games to the point of exhaustion! These kids have SO much energy! Luckily, our group is great with kids and loved every second of it. Afterwards, the children would take us to church. This week, there was Methodist church every night because it’s the week leading up to Easter. Lastly, for our final day we had another Kava ceremony and a feast in the community center. The whole village stayed up late singing and dancing! Beqa was incredible and we were so sad to say goodbye to our host families and move on to the next part of our trip.

Peace out Girl Scout!
